Applying for a Cooking Job


If you are looking for a job as a cook in a restaurant, there are some things that you need to have in order to get that job.

No matter what kitchen job you are looking for, your future employer will want to see experience and schooling. Most chefs attend some type of culinary school which is important when working in a kitchen. There are so many different positions such as line cook, executive chef, prep cook, sous chefs, servers and pastry chefs.

To get a job as chef you have to not only have some experience in cooking you also have to possess other great skills. You need to be able to do the following

  1. You will to listen to more than one person at a time. There are so many people working in a kitchen that you will have about 20 different people trying to talk to you at the same time. You must possess a strong listening skill as well as a lot of patience.
  2. You will also need to have great communication skills, you will need to get out orders and sometime get the kitchen staffs attention from time to time.
  3. You will need to have leadership skills depending on what position you are applying for. An executive chef is also called a head chef. The head chef is in charge of the kitchen and the other kitchen staff must listen to the head chef.
  4. You will also be required , again depending on what position you take you work long hours and it will include holidays and weekends
  5. You will learn and be responsible for ordering the food for the kitchen. The kitchen depends on the head chef to get what they need.

One small mistake can cause chaos. If your dream is to work in a kitchen as chef or a sous chef, then make sure that you are both physically ready as well as mentally ready for this. Working in a kitchen takes long hours, hard work and not to mention you are working in a kitchen where the temperature can rise very quickly. You have to be mentally prepared for a job like a chef. If you are then you will succeed and if you are not ready then start small and work your way up. The goal is to be responsible and successful at your job.
